I am putting my goods in a lock up garage/private garage/council garage/basement/friend’s attic, can you provide cover?
No, we are unable to cover goods in this type of storage. We can only provide insurance for recognised storage facilities.
I cannot find the storage facility I am storing at.
If it is a recognised storage facility and it is not on our list, please let us know by clicking here
Our Approvals Team will have a look at the facility and try to get it added to our database. This can take up to 5 working days. Alternatively please ask your facility to register with us by going to http://www.insurastore.com/form.htm
How long does it take to get a new storage facility added to your website?
From the time we get the request we should have an answer back to you within five working days. The alternative option is to encourage your chosen storage facility to register with us by going to http://www.insurastore.com/form.htm

What kind of things do you cover?
The property covered is your home contents and personal effects including sport equipment, boats, motorcycles, cycles and trailers whilst within an individual self-storage unit or within a building at the self storage location shown on the Confirmation of Insurance. The property covered does not include property relating to any business or commercial venture unless pre approved by insurastore.com please click here for more information.
What are my goods covered against?
You are covered for physical loss of or damage to the Property Covered arising from fire (and/or the additional perils listed below) occurring during the Period of Insurance shown in the Confirmation of Insurance. The additional perils covered are explosion, lightning, aircraft, earthquake, riot, civil commotion, storm, flood, burst pipes, impact by road vehicles, sprinkler leakage, malicious damage, theft where entry or exit was effected by forcible and violent means and moth, insect or vermin from a source outside of the Property Covered.
What is excluded from cover?
Our Insurance does not cover:
- More than the Sum Insured shown in the Confirmation of Insurance.
- More than £5,000 for any one item unless the item and its value is specified in the Confirmation of Insurance.
- The first £25 of each and every claim increased to £100 in respect of moth, insect or vermin.
- More than £10,000 or 25% of your Sum Insured, whichever is the least, in respect of theft or malicious damage when the Property Covered is not in an individual self-storage unit.
- Any item that you are not permitted to store according to the terms of the applicable self-storage licence agreement.
- More than £500 for jewellery, watches, stamps and mobile telephones.
- Money, coins, bullion, precious stones, deeds, bonds, securities, credit / debit / charge cards, lottery tickets or scratch cards, consumer redemption vouchers / cards.
- Living creatures, plants.
- More than 10% of your Sum Insured in respect of any combination of the following bottled spirits, processed tobacco, tobacco products, bottled perfumery.
- Consequential loss and loss of data.
- Any consequence of war, invasion act of foreign enemy, hostilities or a warlike operation or operations (whether war be declared or not), civil war, rebellion, revolution, insurrection, military or usurped power or confiscation nationalisation or requisition or destruction of or damage to property by or under the order of any government or public or local authority.
- Loss of or damage to the Property Covered caused by or arising from any act including (but not limited to) the use of violence or threat thereof, by any group of persons (whether acting alone or on behalf of or in connection with any organisation or government) committed for political, religious, ideological or similar purposes (including the intention to influence any government or to put the public or any section of the public in fear).
- Loss of or damage to Property Covered caused by or arising from:
- Ionising radiation or contamination by radioactivity from any nuclear fuel or from any nuclear waste from the combustion of nuclear fuel.
- Any weapon or device employing atomic or nuclear fission and/or fusion or other like reaction or radioactive force or matter.
- The radioactive, toxic, explosive or other hazardous properties of any nuclear installation, reactor or other nuclear assembly or nuclear component thereof.
- Radioactive matter. The exclusion in this sub-clause does not extend to radioactive isotopes (other than nuclear fuel) when such isotopes are being prepared, carried, stored, or used for commercial, agricultural, medical, scientific or other similar peaceful purposes.
- any chemical, biological, bio-chemical or electromagnetic weapon.
How should I value my goods?
- Home contents and personal effects (other than those listed below) must be valued at the new replacement cost.
- Clothing, antiques, fine arts, boats, motorcycles, cycles and trailers must be valued at their market value.
- Documents must be valued at the new stationery cost.
- Data storage media must be valued at the cost of new blank media.
What should I do in the event of a claim?
- In an emergency, you should take any immediate action which you need to protect the Property Covered from further damage.
- Check the terms and conditions of insurance to see if you are covered for the loss or damage. Read carefully any conditions and exclusions that may apply.
- Immediately select the “Make a Claim” option on the insurastore.com website and follow the on screen instructions.
- Please do not throw away any damaged items before we have had a chance to inspect them.
What will you do to settle my claim?
This will depend on the type of claim and the value involved:
- Insurers shall be entitled at their option to repair or replace any article lost or damaged (whether wholly or in part) or to pay cash compensation. In the event of the total loss or destruction of any article Insurers will not pay more than:
- The new replacement cost of any home contents and personal effects other than listed in b) and c) below.
- The market value of any clothing, antiques, fine arts, boats, motorcycles, cycles and trailers.
- The cost of documents as new stationery.
- The cost of data storage media as new blank data storage media.
- You may be able to start repairs straight away but you will need to get estimates for repairs first.
- Insurers may need to contact you for more information.
- Insurers may need to send a member of their claims staff or a loss adjuster to find out more about your claim. A loss adjuster specialises in dealing with insurance claims. He or she will report to Insurers who will pay any fee involved.
- Insurers claims staff take pride in their service and will do all they can to help you.
Insurers may be able to settle the claim from the information you have given. This is why it is important to keep receipts, valuations and photographs of more expensive items to speed up the time it takes to settle the claim.
Can I pay for my insurance over the phone?
Unfortunately not. Due to the sensitive nature of the information you must supply in order to take out a policy (e.g credit card details). We have two options for payment Sage Pay and Pay Pal both of which have been chosen due to there high levels of security.
Can I cancel my policy at any time?
You may cancel cover at any time after the initial minimum cover period of 28 days by selecting the “Cancel” option in the “My Account” section of the insurastore.com Website and following the on-screen instructions. Provided You have not made a claim You will be entitled to a refund of premium for the remainder of the Period of Insurance shown in the Confirmation of Insurance minus any administration fees.
Are my goods covered on the way to and from the Storage Facility?
If your policy was originally taken out after March 25th 2008, you are covered for physical loss of or damage arising from fire (and/or the additional perils listed below) to home contents and personal effects (including sport equipment, boats, motorcycles, cycles and trailers) occurring during the Period of Insurance shown in the Confirmation of Insurance whilst in transit within an enclosed car or commercial vehicle:
- To the self storage location shown on the Confirmation of Insurance from any location in the UK or
- From the self storage location shown on the Confirmation of Insurance to any location in the UK.
The additional perils covered are:
- Road traffic accident where the conveying car or commercial vehicle is also damaged and
- Theft where entry or exit was effected by forcible and violent means.
This Insurance does not cover:
- Property relating to any business or commercial venture.
- Loss or damage where the conveying car or commercial vehicle was unattended.
- More than £10,000 or your Sum Insured whichever is the less.
My policy is about to expire. How do I renew it?
Log in into your account and go “to amend a policy”. From there you will be able to change the expiration date from 1 day up to 52 weeks from the time of the amendment.
I am moving my goods in storage from one facility to another, is my existing policy still valid?
The policy for your original facility is not valid for your new facility. You must cancel the existing policy relating to the previous facility and take out a new policy for your new facility. (You will be refunded for any remaining period of cover not used on the original policy minus a £3 admin fee)
I have more than one storage unit at a storage facility do I need separate policies for each unit?
One policy will cover multiple units within a single location storage facility. If however you have a number of storage units in several different locations, even if they are the same company, you will need individual policies for each storage location.
Do you discount for long term insurance?
Our prices are so low we are not able to give discounts, but rest assured you are getting great value for money.
Can I set up a direct debit?
At the moment we do not have the facility to process direct debits. However you can buy insurance initially for a minimum of 28 days and then log in to your account and extend your policy as you wish (we always send you reminder emails to let you know when your policy is going to expire)
My storage company will not accept your policy, why?
A few storage companies have adopted a company policy of not accepting any third party insurance, so if you store with them you have to buy their insurance. Our insurance is over and above industry standard and totally valid for any of the facilities on our database and is significantly cheaper...
Who underwrites Insurastore.com?
The RSA.
Your policy is significantly more cost effective than the policy my storage facility is selling, is it not as good?
The Insurastore.com policy is above industry standard and is underwritten by one of the largest underwriters in the UK, the RSA, so please rest assured, that whilst the price is lower the quality certainly is not.
If I take things out of storage or add things can I change the amount insured?
You can manage the amount of cover at any time by logging into your account and amending your policy accordingly.
How quickly do I get my insurance policy documents?
As soon as you have paid for your insurance your policy will be available to download as a PDF directly from the Website. It is also sent to you as an attachment to an email. We do not send hard copies out by post.
What happens if I miss my renewal date?
Your policy has essentially lapsed and therefore you will need to take out a new policy by logging into your account and then taking out a new policy.
I need to update my contact details/ email address
Log in to your account and click “my account” and then update details.
I am going abroad. What do I do if my policy expires?
As long as you have computer access you can manage your account anywhere in the world and because our policy generates in PDF format you can email a copy of it straight to your storage company.
